Courts, fields, pools: San Francisco's sports inventory by the numbers

San Francisco's Recreation and Parks facility inventory contained 2,692 rows when checked September 2. The sports-related rows include 78 basketball courts, 59 tennis courts, 40 ball fields, 9 soccer fields, 8 swimming pools, 5 volleyball courts and 4 pickleball courts.

Those numbers answer one question: what does the city list? They do not answer whether a resident can use a court this afternoon. The records are inventory rows, and their data dates vary. A listed field may be reserved, under repair, shared across sports or governed by a separate permit process.

The department directs leagues, programs and events to its reservation process. That makes the two records complementary: the inventory describes what exists in the city's file, while reservations describe a separate administrative path for requesting space.

The inventory can show where facilities are listed. Claims about closures, maintenance, safety, reservation availability or actual use need a fresher operational source or direct confirmation.
