Two new art spaces are opening on Mission Street

2831 Mission Street gets its next tenant this month. Sin Miedo, a gallery and community arts space run by the local drawing collective Sketchboard Co., opens there September 19 with live screen printing and a photo booth.

The storefront sat as Climate Control Gallery until that space closed earlier this month. Sin Miedo sits next door to Et al., the bookstore and gallery, and the gallery's site describes it as an art gallery, shop, and community-supported library, with classes, workshops, and lectures planned. Sketchboard Co. will run programming with Golden Gate Co-op, a local printing company that plans workshops in the space.

Sketchboard Co. president Natalie Gavidia told Mission Local the group picked the Mission because the collective already works in the area and because the city needs more art spaces. She said that as Latino artists, they wanted a place that is accessible, especially to artists of color. "We absolutely love what we do and we've been doing it for such a long time," Gavidia said. "We felt like it was the best time to gather everybody under one roof and celebrate the resistance of artists here in the Bay area."

A few blocks south, at 3293 Mission Street near 29th Street, The Portal Cinema is set to open next month. It is a nonprofit with a single projection room and 45 seats, according to its website. Founder Nellie Killian has programmed series for the Criterion Channel, the British Film Institute, and the Museum of Moving Image. The venue plans more than 11 showings a week across repertory, new releases, global contemporary, and artists' moving-image work, with DCP, 35mm, and 16mm projection.

Sin Miedo's opening is scheduled for Saturday, September 19, from noon to 6 p.m., with regular hours Thursdays through Mondays, noon to 6 p.m. Opening dates and hours are announcements, not guarantees. A listing cannot prove attendance or demand, and neither venue had opened as of this writing. What is verifiable: two addresses on Mission Street, two organizers with named programs, and a calendar that says both open this fall.
